Printing Process
Relief
A process consisting of cutting a printing surface that remains of the original surface is the design to be printed. During the printing, you can use your hands by using a baren. They type of ink that is printed like depths in the ink depends on the block is made out of. Some examples are wood and linoleum.1) Choose the type of block
2) sketch your design than carve it into the block.
* It is important to make all the carvings smooth.
2) After carving roll the ink out evenly on the block.
3) Next press the paper down unto the block
4) Pull slowly away to reveal the design.
Intaglio
This process is when the image area is below a flat surface of the printing plate. There are many different types like dry point and etching. Dry point is direct starching or moving on the plate which raises a burr which is just moving the metal that makes a blurry line. Etching involves cleaning the plate than applying the ground which than scratch the surface and than etch which eats away the bare copper creating the design.
1) Wiping plate with ink to force the ink into recesses of the plate
2) remove the excess ink from the raised surface
3) Wipe and clean the edges of the ink
4) damp a sheet of paper and lay it on top
5)Than rolled through the press with high pressuse
Lithography
This process involves grease and water resisting one another. Use special pencils to create the image called lithopenicils. The lower the number on the pencil the weaker material and a higher number has a harder material. Allows to draw more sculpture drawings than just a piece of paper. It takes around 4-6 takes to have the image appear on the damp paper because the ink is getting pressed down into the stone.
1) draw a grease image on lithographic stone
2) chemically treat the stone to control where the water goes
3) Mix the chemicals together but don't scratch
4) The image is converted into soap and almost disappears
5) Than apply ink which will bing up the image
I would want to try to do the Relief printing process. I would want to try this because I think it would be interesting to carve a design into linoleum. Its also is easy to apply the ink and only have to press with your hands. I also think its interesting how the different types of block effect how the ink is applied.
